Mr. Pham Quang Tu, Deputy Country Director of Oxfam in Vietnam speaking at the closing ceremony
“Why are female marathoners seen as ‘wrong’?”
"Why is football a 'king' sport but not a 'queen' sport?"
Those are a few of many interesting questions raised in the talk show “Gender prejudices in exercise and sports”, with the participation of experts in gender and media as well as representatives of the marathon teams. The speakers discussed the essential role of the media in promoting the elimination of gender stereotypes and promoting gender mainstreaming. Gender stereotypes have a negative impact on both men and women.
All speakers agreed that gender equality (GE) is not about swapping roles between men, women, and other genders (forcing men to do what women are doing and vice versa). Nor is it a 50/50 absolutization of everything. GE is about respecting everyone's freedom to make decisions regardless of gender, and this decision does not affect the rights of others.
The talk show also honored the runners who have successfully completed the Genderathon, overcoming their limits, challenging gender stereotypes and promoting gender equality. The race has attracted more than 2,000 participants, with a total distance of 55,000 km.
