Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to influence both private sector and the government for effective policy practices and enforcement to ensure entitlement to decent work and gender equality at work in the tuna wild catch and processing sector in Vietnam through research/evidenced based advocacy and selective demonstrations. The decent work aspects of the project focus include rights to employment contract with coverage of social and health insurances, safe and healthy working environment, and legitimate benefits to women workers.
Outcomes
- Tuna fishers and processing workers have improved knowledge and enjoy legitimate rights to decent work and gender equality at work.
- The national government and the private sector have improved knowledge and support for buy-in of the project’s recommendations.
- Asian regional seafood civil society organisations’ alliances and networks are empowered for learning and collective influencing.
The project targets
30 tuna vessel owners; five tuna processing enterprises; the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries; ASEAN seafood enterprises (in Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam); 100 tuna fishers (direct beneficiaries); 1,000 tuna processing workers (indirectly via policy changes by processing enterprises, 80% of whom are women).

Key results
- 10 tuna vessel owners implement practices ensuring entitlement to decent work and gender equality for their fishers;
- 01 tuna processing enterprise practises policy development/ improvement and implementation of decent work and gender equality at work;
- 01 document on good practices and success stories from tuna vessel owners and processing enterprises is developed and widely disseminated;
- 02 sets of policy recommendations on practising decent work and gender equality at work are developed and submitted to the government and private sector separately to inform the design of appropriate policies;
