On September 30th, around 100 guests participated in a National Business Forum on “Strengthening Disaster Resilience of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Viet Nam” organized jointly by the Assistance Center for SME-North Viet Nam (TAC-Hanoi), The Asia Foundation, ADPC and Oxfam, in Hanoi.
The event was an effective and impressive participatory event where representatives from different stakeholders came and shared their experiences, challenges, needs and plans to strengthen disaster resilience in relation to Small and Medium Enterprise businesses. The day also showed a strong commitment to the framework of the Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM) by donors from the Government of Canada and the German Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, MPI, MARD, MONRE and other international NGOs. Participating SMEs included Viettronimex Da Nang, Nam Anh JSC, and VINARE. We hope that this Forum will become an annual event for further exchanges of information and experiences in building resilience with private sectors.
Discussed topics included Key Legislations and Policies on SME Development focus on Climate Resilience, the needs of SMEs, private sector engagement in DRM and CC, disaster insurance, DRM planning, supporting SMEs build resilience and roadmap for SME disaster resilience
All participants then joined group discussions for (1) Awareness and Capacity Building for Business; (2) Finance and Insurance; (3) Institution and Policies and (4) Business DRM Database and Information, and finished with sharing and learning from each group presentation.
