During the recent Mekong Startup Forum 2022 held in Dong Thap, Oxfam actively participated in a discussion session focused on the context and solutions for rice production. Oxfam took the opportunity to introduce technological solutions aimed at controlling emissions throughout the production chain.
To address the market's demand for low-emission agriculture and provide people with the necessary tools and opportunities for participation, Oxfam and its partners developed the RICE Hero application. This innovative app enables farmers and businesses to monitor and manage greenhouse gas emissions, facilitating the adjustment of farming techniques and inputs accordingly. Additionally, the application assists authorities in conducting emissions inventories within the rice production industry.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Oxfam played a significant role in developing forms and labeling methods for businesses based on climate and environmental criteria. These forms and labels, categorized as green, yellow, and red, serve as an effective means of assessing and communicating the environmental and climate performance of businesses. This initiative aims to promote sustainable practices, encourage responsible decision-making, and raise awareness about the environmental impact of business operations.
As stated by Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Climate Change Specialist at Oxfam in Vietnam, low-emission agriculture, specifically precision agriculture*, presents an opportunity for modernization and innovation in Vietnamese products, enabling them to meet international quality standards at a more affordable price. To seize this opportunity, it is crucial to strengthen linkages, establish large-scale models, receive support in digital transformation, and enhance climate resilience.
Oxfam is committed to supporting individuals, businesses, and governments in their pursuit of green growth and inclusive development.
-------
According to the World Bank's 2021 report titled "Towards Green Agriculture Transformation in Vietnam: Shifting to a Low Carbon Rice Model" agricultural emissions in Vietnam contribute approximately 19% to the country's total emissions, with rice production alone accounting for 48% of these emissions.
*Precision agriculture refers to the integration of modern information technology platforms into the agricultural production process.
