People experiencing Rice Hero application
Oxfam's latest initiative in Vietnam, known as Rice Hero, aims to tackle greenhouse gas emissions, particularly within the rice sector.
The Rice Hero application simplifies the process of measuring and collecting emissions at the household, cooperative, and enterprise levels. Users only need to provide basic input during rice cultivation, harvesting, and processing, and the application will calculate the current emissions while suggesting effective strategies to reduce them.
By utilizing Rice Hero, rice businesses can determine their carbon footprint* and work towards achieving a low-carbon label, opening up opportunities for their products to access potential export markets. Additionally, the application offers comprehensive information on weather conditions and agricultural services tailored to specific growing areas.
To ensure the successful implementation of Rice Hero, a training and testing workshop was conducted, engaging officials from agricultural extension centers, service and technical promotion centers, farmer households, cooperatives, and rice enterprises. The workshop participants highly praised Rice Hero for its ingenuity and practical application potential. The official launch of Rice Hero is scheduled for the end of 2022.
By 2030, Vietnam has made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector by 30% compared to the levels recorded in 2020. Notably, rice production alone accounts for 50% of the total greenhouse gas emissions within Vietnam's agricultural sector. In order to support this ambitious goal, Oxfam actively collaborates with citizens, businesses, and governments on the journey towards achieving a net-zero emissions target.
*The carbon footprint refers to the complete sum of greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the lifecycle of a particular product or service. This encompasses emissions produced during the production, utilization, and eventual disposal or end-of-life phase of the product or service.
