In 2006, the Law on Gender Equality was passed by the 11th National Assembly, marking an important milestone in advancing gender equality in Vietnam. After nearly 15 years of implementation, Vietnam has achieved significant progress on gender equality, contributing meaningfully to the country’s socio‑economic development. However, the implementation process has also revealed a number of obstacles and challenges that need to be addressed promptly in order to create a stronger legal foundation for all levels, sectors, and citizens to effectively carry out the Law. From this reality, the Department of Gender Equality under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs has developed a plan to propose research for revising the Law on Gender Equality in the coming years.
To support the review and assessment of the Law’s provisions, the Department of Gender Equality has received cooperation and support from Oxfam in Vietnam to conduct research and review policies and legal regulations on gender equality in the political field. The aim is to propose amendments and supplements to the Law on Gender Equality and related legal documents, ensuring they meet practical needs and address existing shortcomings and obstacles in the current legal framework. We hope that this Report on the Assessment and Completeness of Policies and Laws on Gender Equality in the Political Field in Vietnam will serve as a valuable resource for gender equality practitioners, policymakers, and researchers.
