Report on the impact of climate change and natural disasters on Multidimensional Inequality in Vietnam.
Oxfam in Vietnam, along with the Mekong Development Research Institute, recently launched a report on the Impacts of Climate Change and Disasters on Multidimensional Inequality in Vietnam. The event gathered experts from various organizations, including UNDP, the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, and the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, and Climate Change.
Using the Multi-Dimensional Inequality Analysis framework, the research delved into the effects of natural disasters and climate change on four key areas: life and health, education, decent work and financial security, and adequate living conditions. This groundbreaking study sheds light on the unequal consequences of climate change for different segments of the population, marking a significant step forward in understanding these complex issues in Vietnam.
The findings revealed that poor and vulnerable communities are disproportionately impacted by natural disasters and climate change. Moreover, their ability to recover from such events is significantly hindered compared to other groups. During the workshop, experts engaged in policy discussions to highlight the connection between climate change and multidimensional inequality. They emphasized the importance of integrating adaptation and climate change mitigation efforts with poverty reduction and inequality reduction programs.

The Multi-dimensional Inequality Framework (MIF) was developed by the London School of Economics (LSE) and Oxfam in 2018. The MIF framework assesses inequality across seven life domains to take a comprehensive and in-depth look at inequality. MIF builds on the competency approach of Amartya Sen, a 1998 Nobel Prize-winning economist, to provide a methodology for assessing inequality in individual well-being.
