The story of Ms. Nguyen Thi No, Khoi Xa Ngoai village, Bao Nhai commune
When the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Women's Union had not arrived in Khoi Xa Ngoai village to form groups of people having the same interests, Ms. No kept impatiently looking at nearby groups. Once the group was established in Khoi Xa Ngoai village, Ms. No immediately volunteered to join the group. She participated in all training activities and workshops organized by the project. Some members did not understand the purposes of these meetings and saw going to the meetings as playing children's games. She told them: "If we don't practice, we cannot fly high; if we don't know, we have to learn from the beginning, just like a child learns."
From the initial activities stimulated by the project, Ms. No now visited the farms and consulted different types of veterinary drugs herself: “I found Mr. C. in Lu Street selling all kinds of yeast treatment and good veterinary drugs at a very cheap price”. Once, finding information about a good pig farm, despite the darkness outside, she insisted on telling her son to give her a ride by motorbike to ask for information about the breed, and methods to raise and organize the barn. It is the willingness to learn and experiment that helped Ms. No easily overcome difficulties in agricultural production. In a movement to raise pigs, her family invested in building a standard barn, then in mid-2016, her family switched to raising chickens as pigs lost their value. At first, she tried to raise 50 children, but all of them died due to illness. Since attending training and learning how to raise livestock, she has been able to raise hundreds of chickens safely. Every time selling chickens, she earns several million Viet Nam Dong: "It's important to know what the market needs so as not to worry about the possibility to sell."
For Ms. No, another benefit when participating in social groups and activities is self-affirmation. At first, her husband was hesitant to see her actively participating in all project activities both in the commune and outside the province, however, she said: “We can only show decisiveness in work and relationships”. Therefore, he gradually changed, trusted, and felt more comfortable with his wife, sometimes even reminding her to go to meetings and hang out with people in the group.
