The Bac Lieu seminar on March 30th, titled "Promote the Rice-Shrimp Model and Business Links in Mekong Delta" showcased remarkable outcomes, invaluable insights, and consultations to fortify policies in the region. This event highlighted the significance of sustainable rice-shrimp models and their contributions to farmers, the environment, and the economy.
Experts emphasized the tangible benefits derived from implementing the shrimp-rice model. These benefits encompassed a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improved farming space, the promotion of eco-friendly labeled products, and significantly higher output compared to conventional practices. Notably, Mekong Delta farmers reported earning profits of 60-70 million VND per hectare annually.
During the workshop, attendees deliberated on the challenges and obstacles encountered in expanding the scale of investment in this model. They also explored measures to overcome bottlenecks in monitoring regional development, organizing production, and ensuring sustainable growth while balancing the interests of various economic sectors.
The seminar was jointly organized by Oxfam in Vietnam, the Centre for Marine Life Conservation and Community Development (MCD), the International Collaborating Centre for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS), and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province. More than 270 delegates representing central agencies, localities, enterprises, research institutes, and cooperatives actively participated in the event, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
