The SFV-Export project, aimed at boosting Vietnamese SMEs in the spice, fruit, and vegetable sectors, concluded on a high note. Funded by the European Union, implemented by Oxfam in Vietnam and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 2022 to 2023, the project has significantly uplifted the export potential of Vietnamese spices, fruits, and vegetables.
Despite Vietnam's agricultural richness, SMEs often struggle to realize their full export potential due to challenges in meeting international quality standards, customer acquisition, and brand development. Central to the project's approach was providing SMEs with expert training and consultancy to meet global standards like BRCGS, Fairtrade, and SEDEX Smeta. Beyond compliance, SFV-Export fostered a culture of social responsibility within the value chain, advocating for fair practices and promoting gender equality in workplace policies.
“We not only emphasize the critical role of sustainable standards in unlocking export opportunities,” shared Ms. Hoang Le Trang, Project Manager, Oxfam in Vietnam. “Our approach also ensures that small-scale producers are entitled to fair benefits, workers are guaranteed safe working conditions, and gender equality issues are given proper attention.”

Another significant pillar of the project was its role in facilitating connections between Vietnamese SMEs and international markets. This is done through tailored market analysis, improved marketing strategies, and participation in agricultural fairs. Aiding this process was the launch of the Info Hub for Vietnamese Agricultural Export, an innovative platform that offers up-to-date market insights, analysis, and learning courses.
After two years of participating in the project, 7 SMEs improved production processes and policies, four of which have been certified with BRCGS and Fairtrade standards. Nearly 200 enterprises benefited from training in European technical standards, and 7 enterprises enhanced their export strategies. Moreover, the participation of nearly 90 enterprises in international business matching events has broadened their global footprint.
With replicable initiatives, the SFV project, acting as foundational support, will significantly enhance the ability of numerous SMEs to showcase Vietnamese agricultural products on the global stage.
