The project contributes to reducing poverty and inequality in rural areas of Vietnam through addressing challenges in the clam and bamboo value chains. The SCBV project implements an integrated value chain development and governance strengthening approach to enable small-scale producers (SSPs) to practice sustainable production and collectively integrate into dedicated, certified value chains through supply contracts with micro, small, and medium size (MSMEs) processing enterprises and lead firms.

Objectives

SSPs and processing MSMEs in clam and bamboo value chains receive increased incomes from sustainable production practices, improved business efficiency and access to markets. Clam and bamboo value chains in five provinces are better organised, equitable and inclusive.

Outcomes

  • Small-scale producers and MSMEs have enhanced capacity towards sustainable standards, such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), or the MSC-based fishery improvement project, and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for productive and innovative business management, quality control and traceability capacities and certifications. Additionally, small-scale producers can analyse their interests, concerns, and burdens to define a roadmap to support women-led value chains.
  • Increased added value for MSME processors. MSMEs improve their investment and sourcing policies through the application of innovative management and technologies. Processing lead firms adopt inclusive business practices and source their supply directly from small-scale producers.
  • Small-scale producers gain negotiating power. Small scale producers are better organised and their capacity is strengthened. They are able to take collective action to negotiate for equitable benefit-sharing in the value chains.
  • Increased market access. Small-scale producers and MSMEs have greater access to domestic and international markets through established trade linkages in Vietnam and the European Union. They are also supported to develop their marketing capacity.
  • Enabling policy environment. Public-Private Alliances will be established in five provinces to support sustainable and inclusive value chain development and advocate for national policies. All stakeholders in the alliance will work together to monitor value chain performance, tackle economic, social, environmental and political challenges, and remove any barriers that may exist.

Key results

  • 35,000 SSPs adopt appropriate production techniques and practice sustainable standards.
  • 95% of targeted SSPs have increased annual income from clam and bamboo.
  • 150 SSP groups are better organised and strengthened capacity to negotiate for their position and equitable benefit sharing in the value chains.
  • 60 MSME processors, including seven lead firms, enhance added value and improve their investment and sourcing policies.
  • 80% of targeted SSPs and MSMEs have increased access to national and international markets.
  • 05 Public-Private Alliances are established in five provinces and function effectively.
  • National Policies are improved to enhance and support sustainable and inclusive value chain development.
